The Hollies, Britain’s oldest truckstop and a landmark off Junction 12 of the M6 has just rolled out a series of significant upgrades. The highlight? A fresh sustainability push that includes new solar panels, electric vehicle chargers, and a high-tech water system designed to save both energy and resources.

According to Certas Energy, the site’s owner, a total of 48 solar panels have been installed; together, they’ll generate around 8% of The Hollies’ electricity needs. Government grants partly supported the £35,000 project, reflecting Certas’ broader mission to reduce emissions and modernise operations.

In addition to the solar upgrade, two brand-new 22 kW EV chargers are now operational. They’re part of the wider Evolo EV network operated by Certas and provide a convenient, fast-charging solution for electric vehicles on the go.

But the improvements don’t stop there. A new smart water system has also been installed. It pulls water from the mains, purifies it, and removes iron to improve quality. The system also features real-time monitoring to quickly flag any leaks, helping prevent both waste and damage to equipment.

Security at The Hollies has also been stepped up. Staff are now equipped with body cameras, a UK first for any truck stop, providing an extra layer of protection for both workers and customers.

Over the past three years, Certas Energy has been steadily transforming The Hollies. From resurfaced parking bays and upgraded security systems to a modern kitchen and now this wave of sustainability-focused enhancements, the truckstop is evolving for a cleaner, brighter future without losing its old-school charm.

David Weaver, The Hollies roadside services truck stop manager, said: “The Hollies is more than just a place to refuel; it’s a vital community hub for truckers and travellers. “These investments are about making sure we meet the needs of today while preparing for a cleaner, more sustainable future.”
