San Francisco-based climate-tech startup Terradot has raised $58.2 million in funding to advance its vision of transforming enhanced rock weathering (ERW) into a global carbon removal solution. The grant includes $4.2 million in seed financing and a recently closed $54 million Series A round.
The funding was supported by notable investors, including:
John Doerr, Sheryl Sandberg & Tom Bernthal, and George Roberts.
Strategic players include Microsoft’s Climate Innovation Fund, Google, and Cisco.
Venture funds Floodgate, Kleiner Perkins, Acre Venture Partners, Gigascale Capital, Valor Capital, and Ponderosa Ventures.
Founded in 2022 at Stanford, Terradot is tackling the challenges of ERW by optimizing rock weathering processes to maximize CO₂ uptake. The company is also building advanced measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) tools to ensure precision in carbon capture efforts. These solutions will be integrated into a digital platform, enabling ERW to scale seamlessly across agricultural and industrial systems worldwide.
Terradot has already launched large-scale pilot operations in Brazil, a prime location for ERW due to its tropical soils, agricultural strength, and a 93% clean electricity matrix. In partnership with EMBRAPA, Brazil's top agricultural research institution, Terradot, is developing a scalable ERW framework to tap into the country’s carbon removal potential.
Key milestones include:
In just over a year, 48,000 tons of rock spread across 1,800 hectares of farmland.
Early results show tropical climates enhance weathering rates, making ERW more effective.
Terradot’s team combines expertise in climate tech, soil science, and AI:
James Kanoff: Co-founder of The Farmlink Project, a leading nonprofit addressing food insecurity.
Sasankh Munukutla: Stanford AI for Climate researcher.
Scott Fendorf: Stanford Earth System Sciences Professor with 30+ years of soil research.
Other leaders include:
Julia Marisa Sekula: Brazilian climate author and ex-banker.
Connor Sendel: Climate-tech operator and former BCG consultant.
Terradot’s founding science team features luminaries like Peter Nico (Lawrence Berkeley National Lab), Uli Mayer (University of British Columbia), and Shawn Benner (Boise State University).
With cutting-edge research, a robust team, and global operations, Terradot is positioning ERW as a scalable, nature-based solution to remove carbon at gigaton levels. This breakthrough approach could reshape global carbon removal strategies and accelerate the fight against climate change.
