Royal Mail has officially opened what it’s calling the UK’s greenest delivery office, a fully electrified, renewable-powered hub in Harehills, Leeds, that’s redefining what sustainable logistics can look like in practice.

At the heart of this West Yorkshire site is a bold shift: every single delivery and collection vehicle operates on electricity. No hybrids, no combustion engines—just clean, quiet EVs. This marks a significant step in Royal Mail’s broader strategy to slash emissions across its national fleet. This campaign recently reached a milestone with the rollout of its 7,000th electric vehicle.

While nearly a quarter of Royal Mail’s delivery offices nationwide now integrate some level of EV usage, Harehills stands out as one of the few that’s gone all-in—every vehicle, every route, every charge.

The site is equipped with its own EV charging infrastructure, powered by 100% renewable electricity purchased directly from certified clean sources. That makes these deliveries not just electric but entirely zero-emission from end to end.

And it’s not just about the vans. The building itself is built for efficiency. An air source heat pump, designed to extract heat from the outside air and funnel it into the central heating system, replaces conventional heating. According to Royal Mail, this system is more than three times as efficient as traditional gas or oil boilers, resulting in significantly reduced energy use and carbon emissions.

Together, these innovations position the Harehills Delivery Office as more than just a logistical hub, it’s a working prototype of what a low-carbon, high-efficiency delivery network can look like in the UK’s urban centres.
