Royal Mail has just hit a significant milestone—its 7,000th electric vehicle is now officially on the road. And the momentum isn’t slowing. The postal giant has revealed plans to expand its electric fleet by another 1,800 vans over the coming year, further cementing its role as the UK’s leader in zero-emission deliveries.

The newest EV has joined operations at the South Lambeth Delivery Office, which now boasts 71 electric vans. It’s a strong symbol of how Royal Mail is embedding sustainability deep into its daily logistics.

What’s next? In the coming 12 months, a fresh wave of 1,800 electric vans—supported by a large-scale rollout of charging infrastructure—will be deployed. Roughly half of these vans will be supplied by Stellantis and produced at their Ellesmere Port facility, showcasing a strong commitment to UK-based manufacturing.

Royal Mail’s EV journey started in December 2017 with the purchase of its first 100 electric vans, quietly introduced at various delivery offices nationwide. Fast forward to today, and nearly one in four delivery offices now rely on EVs for daily routes.

Even more impressive? These electric vans are charged on-site across Royal Mail’s property portfolio, powered exclusively by 100% renewable electricity. It's not just about cutting emissions—it’s about doing it the right way.

And it doesn’t stop at vans. Royal Mail is now shifting into heavy-duty territory with its first-ever electric trucks. Built in partnership with Magtec and supported by an £800,000 Innovate UK grant, two 19-tonne electric trucks are being tested under real-world conditions—a clear signal that Royal Mail’s electrification strategy is scaling up across all vehicle classes.

Royal Mail’s chief operating officer, Alistair Cochrane, added, “Today, we’ve hit a major milestone in our journey to reach net zero by 2040.

“We’ve strengthened our position as the UK’s largest electric delivery fleet, and our investment in 1,800 more zero-emission vans will help us maintain this in the future.

“Royal Mail is going the extra mile to decarbonise its fleet, with huge benefits for our posties, our customers and the planet.”
