A brand-new service station equipped with ultra-fast electric vehicle chargers is set to break ground soon on the A303. InstaVolt, the operator behind the project, will replace the current facilities at Chicklade, located approximately ten miles from Stonehenge in Wiltshire, with a state-of-the-art "superhub" featuring 30 charging points. Alongside the chargers, visitors can look forward to a spacious café and a farm shop offering a selection of local produce.
Construction is scheduled to begin in August, with the site expected to open to the public by late spring 2026. This particular stretch of the A303 is known for heavy traffic, especially during holidays. Similar to InstaVolt’s flagship site in Winchester, the new hub at Chicklade will harness solar power and store energy in large-scale batteries. During the summer months, the company also plans to offer discounted charging rates.
Delvin Lane, CEO of InstaVolt, which has a network of charging sites, said: "Chicklade is the next step in our mission to combine scale, sustainability and convenience.
"As EVs become more accessible and with the private sector committing significant investment, we're proud to be building the infrastructure that will keep the country moving."
The new site is being developed on the 9,000-acre Fonthill Estate, which has collaborated closely with InstaVolt over the past two years to bring the project to life.
Representatives from the estate described the project as a long-term, sustainable investment that will benefit the surrounding community, improve the local transport network, and create new jobs throughout the region.
Meanwhile, in a move to support EV adoption nationwide, the government has announced that larger charging hubs will now be officially signposted on major A roads. This change aims to reassure non-EV drivers that charging infrastructure is not only present, but also dependable.
Lilian Greenwood, the Roads Minister, noted that the UK is seeing the installation of a new EV charge point every hour. She emphasised the government’s commitment to making electric vehicle ownership both more affordable and more accessible.
