Liquid Wind Lands €44 Million to Scale Low-Carbon Fuel Solutions Globally

Swedish eFuel innovator Liquid Wind has raised an impressive €44 million in its Series C funding round. This investment, led by Uniper, HYCAP Fund I SCSp, and Samsung Ventures, is among the largest in Europe’s eFuel sector this year, setting the stage for transformative advancements in sustainable fuel technology.

The new funding will propel Liquid Wind’s ambitious strategy to develop ten eFuel facilities by 2027, with a bold vision of building 500 facilities globally by 2050.

Claes Fredriksson, CEO and Founder of Liquid Wind, said: “Global shipping has realised the urgency of low-carbon eFuels as a commercial necessity to meet sustainability targets and new regulations. The demand for low-carbon maritime fuels is undeniable, and we are seeing major shipping companies launching eFuel-powered vessels. Our shareholders recognise this, and we are pleased to welcome Samsung as a new investor, alongside continued support from Uniper and Hycap. This backing strengthens our capacity to accelerate production and advance our vision to reduce the world’s dependency on fossil fuel. The investment, the largest in our company history, reflects their confidence in Liquid Wind’s potential to scale eFuel production in the years to come.”

These facilities will produce eMethanol, a fossil-free fuel that provides a sustainable solution for decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors like shipping. By using biogenic CO2 and renewable electricity, Liquid Wind aims to deliver eMethanol with 94% lower emissions on a "Well-to-Wake" basis—addressing the maritime industry’s urgent demand for sustainable energy.

The shipping industry faces monumental challenges as over 100,000 operational ships must transition to sustainable fuels to meet the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) net-zero targets by 2050. Liquid Wind’s scalable and modular facilities are poised to be a cornerstone of this transformation, with each plant producing 100,000 tonnes of eFuel annually while capturing 150,000 tonnes of CO2.

HYCAP’s CEO, James Munce, highlighted the significance of Liquid Wind’s approach, stating “We are pleased to strengthen our backing for Liquid Wind and its innovative eFuel facilities. Their standardised approach to scaling low-carbon fuel production is exactly what the maritime sector needs to meet its decarbonisation targets. Since our initial investment, Claes and the team have demonstrated a laser focus on delivering the underlying projects and accelerating energy transition in the maritime sector.”

Liquid Wind’s journey is bolstered by partnerships with industry leaders like Alfa Laval, Carbon Clean, Siemens Energy, and Topsoe, who contribute to advanced decarbonization technologies. The company has also joined forces with energy providers such as Sundsvall Energi, Umeå Energi, NordFuel, and Puhuri to advance projects in Sweden and Finland.

One standout initiative is the NorthStarH2 project in Östersund, Sweden. Selected by Uniper, this project aims to save approximately 200,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, highlighting Liquid Wind’s ability to deliver impactful, large-scale decarbonization solutions.

Founded in Gothenburg, Sweden, Liquid Wind rapidly emerges as a global leader in sustainable fuel technology. With its innovative approach to eMethanol production and a clear focus on scalability, the company is not just addressing the immediate needs of the shipping industry but also paving the way for a net-zero future.
