JLR is setting a new industry standard by becoming the first carmaker to roll out tyres made from over 70 per cent renewable and recycled materials, at scale. These new tyres will debut on select New Range Rover models fitted with 22-inch wheels later this year, with plans already in motion to expand availability across other vehicles in the brand’s portfolio.
The innovation comes from a close collaboration with global tyre manufacturer Pirelli. The new P Zero tyres are engineered to meet the highest standards of performance and durability, while significantly reducing environmental impact. Instead of using traditional raw materials, these tyres are crafted from alternatives like silica extracted from rice husks and resins made from plant-based sources, including agricultural by-products and used cooking oils.
But it doesn’t stop there. Recycled content also plays a significant role. The tyres incorporate recovered carbon black, a vital compound that boosts stability and longevity, sourced from end-of-life tyres. Recycled steel is also used to enhance handling and support structural integrity. All this helps reduce dependence on virgin materials and eases pressure on the planet’s resources.
Despite their eco-friendly design, the tyres are built for performance. They match or even exceed the capabilities of conventional options. That’s partly thanks to the addition of Forest Stewardship Council-certified natural rubber, ensuring ethical and sustainable rubber sourcing.
Reuben Chorley, JLR’s Sustainable Industrial Operations Director, said: “This is another example of how JLR is leading on sustainable design innovation in collaboration with its supply chain partners to deliver at scale, while reducing the environmental impact of our products.
“Achieving a more sustainable composition without compromising quality and performance is a challenge because of the complexity of tyre design. But working closely with Pirelli and leveraging both companies’ expertise in procurement and engineering, we have been able to deliver this industry first.”
JLR made headlines last year when it became the first automaker to commit to using FSC-certified rubber tyres across its entire vehicle lineup. Third-party certifications support every bio-based and recycled material used in the tyres, guaranteeing quality and transparency. Both JLR and Pirelli have made it clear this is just the beginning. Their shared long-term goal? To create tyres that are 100 per cent composed of renewable and recycled content, without compromising on safety, comfort, or performance.
