Cranswick has begun using Sunswap’s electric refrigeration units across its Preston transport fleet following a series of trials that revealed substantial cost and emissions savings compared to traditional diesel and even hydrotreated vegetable oil systems.

The British food company, known for managing a complete farm-to-fork supply chain, is rolling out Sunswap’s zero-emission refrigeration technology as part of its push to meet Science-Based Targets and advance its broader Second Nature sustainability goals.

These battery and solar-powered units, known as Endurance, eliminate emissions of carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulates from refrigeration, a significant challenge in food logistics.

During live operational trials in 2024, Cranswick saw impressive results. The Sunswap units delivered a 43% reduction in total costs compared to diesel-powered refrigeration systems. They even outperformed the company’s existing HVO solution, proving to be not only more environmentally friendly but also more cost-effective.

Michael Lowe, chief executive officer at Sunswap, said: “Cranswick joins the growing number of operators choosing zero-emission refrigeration for UK food manufacturing.

“What’s significant here is that Cranswick didn’t just compare us to standard diesel. They compared Endurance against their existing HVO solution, and the operational benefits were compelling.

“This shows that even companies already investing in lower-carbon fuels can achieve breakthrough improvements with purpose-built electric refrigeration.”

Gary Hewson, transport manager at Cranswick, said: “Integrating Sunswap’s zero-emission refrigeration technology aligns perfectly with our Second Nature sustainability commitments.

“Beyond the benefits of direct emissions reduction, the operational cost savings and performance reliability made this a sound business decision that supports our progress towards our Science Based Targets.”

The new electric units will now be used to transport Cranswick’s temperature-sensitive meat products from production sites to retail stores across the UK. The switch ensures high standards for food quality while cutting emissions throughout the entire distribution process.
