Latvia-based Aerones has just raised $62 million to scale its robotic and AI-driven technology that keeps wind turbines in top shape.
Why does this matter? Aerones’ robots can do the job of maintaining wind turbine blades in about half the time it takes humans. That’s a giant leap forward in an industry where downtime equals lost revenue. And for an energy source like wind, now supplying roughly 10 per cent of global power, that kind of efficiency can have a massive ripple effect.
Kruze emphasised the efficiency, safety and cost-effectiveness of their solutions, stating: “The industry is scaling really fast and maintenance is tough. The wind turbine downtime costs more than the labour itself, and that bottleneck is driving up the cost of renewable energy.”
Kruze further explained the proactive approach of Aerones.”We don’t wait until the blade is already on the ground, but work out how to prevent that blade from falling to the ground.”
This new funding round is expected to enhance Aerones' operations in over 30 countries. US-based investors, including Activate Capital and S2G Investments, both of which have a track record of backing clean tech disruptors. Alongside the equity injection, Aerones has also secured a €4 million grant from the EU Innovation Fund and raised an additional €30 million in funding last year.
Here’s the challenge. Wind energy may be booming, but the way turbines are maintained hasn’t kept up. Most maintenance is still done manually. That means turbines are often offline for long periods. Those delays cost energy companies and turbine operators millions of dollars.
Aerones is changing that. The company’s innovative robotic systems are faster, safer, and more scalable. And now, with a growing footprint in the United States, they’ve opened an office in Dallas, Texas. They’re not just setting up shop—they’re hiring and training local talent, too.
Looking ahead, Aerones is planning another round of fundraising. The company will pursue a venture debt round in the second half of 2025, targeting a raise of between $15 million and $20 million.
Since 2020, Aerones' technology has helped generate an additional 400,000 megawatt-hours of clean electricity. Even more impressively, it has helped reduce carbon emissions by 165,000 tonnes. That’s the equivalent of taking more than 35,000 cars off the road for an entire year.
Aerones’ breakthrough in robotic wind turbine maintenance is a game-changer for clean energy—faster, safer, and more efficient.
