ABB, a global leader in electrification and automation, is taking a significant step toward building a resource-efficient future. The company has committed CA$130 million, about US$100 million, to establish a new production and research centre in Montreal. This investment represents ABB’s most significant financial commitment in Canada so far and underscores the growing importance of Canadian manufacturing in its global strategy.
Strengthening Canadian supply chains
With the demand for grid resilience and advanced power technologies on the rise, ABB’s new facility will strengthen domestic sourcing, foster supplier partnerships, and advance sustainable procurement practices. Already, more than 80 per cent of the solutions sold by ABB Installation Products in Canada are made or assembled locally. Around 70 percent of materials are sourced within Canada, including all of the steel and aluminum.
This latest move builds on a decade of investment in Canada, during which ABB has invested approximately US$275 million in its operations. That money has been invested in modernising facilities, introducing advanced automation, and enhancing workforce capabilities. The new Montreal site, which has also received CA$16 million in funding from Investissement Québec, will replace ABB’s existing plants in Iberville and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, consolidating them under one roof.

A larger, greener hub
The new greenfield facility will cover approximately 34,000 square feet, which is about one-third larger than the two facilities it replaces. Equipped with the latest production automation and digital technologies, the site will become a central hub for more than 600 employees working across manufacturing, engineering, R&D, testing, and support.
As ABB ramps up production and introduces new product lines, the company expects to create additional jobs, particularly in growth industries such as utilities, renewable energy, transportation, residential development, and infrastructure.
Reducing carbon footprint
Beyond production, the investment reflects ABB’s long-term commitment to lowering the carbon footprint of Canadian manufacturing. By consolidating operations and strengthening local supply chains, ABB is positioning itself to deliver sustainable, locally made solutions for decades to come.

Khalid Mandri, President of ABB Installation Products, says: "Our investment will support our future growth in Canada, as demand increases with customers focused on grid resilience, power distribution, and renewables, and in new transportation, buildings, and infrastructure projects.
"The teams in our advanced new facility will deliver products and innovation that will help power businesses and homes across the country.
"Together with investments made in the US and Europe, the opening of this new facility will be a key part of our global growth strategy."
The Montreal site will integrate clean, energy-efficient electrical equipment and heating systems to reduce energy consumption and cut carbon emissions by more than 95% compared with the two existing facilities.
The site is expected to become operational in mid-2027.
