The UK’s electric vehicle charging network has grown significantly over the past year, with the total number of charging points now exceeding 82,000. According to the latest data from Zapmap, by the end of June 2025, there were 82,369 EV chargers installed nationwide. Of those, 8,670 have been added just since January.
One of the most notable trends is the rise of larger charging hubs, which offer six or more rapid or ultra-rapid chargers. As of 2025, 136 of these high-capacity hubs have come online, bringing the national total to 673.
Jade Edwards, head of insights at Zapmap, said: “The EV landscape at the mid-point of 2025 looks significantly different to six months ago, in terms of the shape of the infrastructure, EV demand and availability and the legislative landscape.
“We’re always pleased to see strong growth in en-route charging and hubs, not just because they are so convenient for EV drivers on long journeys, but also because they provide high visibility and help instil confidence for drivers looking to make the switch.”
This expansion is being driven in part by government support. The Local EV Infrastructure (LEVI) fund, launched in 2022, is now beginning to have a tangible impact. Designed to support EV owners without private driveways or garages, the fund is helping to install curbside chargers in residential areas. As of now, approximately 80 LEVI-funded projects are underway, and 19 of those are currently at the tendering stage. Already this year, two of these projects have gone live, resulting in more than 1,200 new on-street charging points.
At the heart of the charging network are these local on-street units, most of which offer lower-powered charging. This category now makes up the majority of the infrastructure, with 65,671 chargers in place.
“We look forward to seeing what further measures the government can introduce to make access to public charging more equitable,” Edwards added.
Regionally, the North East has seen impressive momentum, with a 40% increase in the number of charging points across all speed categories compared to the previous year.
Meanwhile, growth hasn’t been limited to the North. The East of England and the West Midlands have also seen substantial expansion, with year-on-year increases of more than 39% and 38%, respectively.
Vicky Read, CEO at ChargeUK, said: “It’s particularly encouraging to see growth accelerating outside of the South East, with the North East, East of England and West Midlands seeing significant increases, as well as the continued rise in the number of high-profile and high-powered hubs to support en-route charging.
“To keep the rollout on track and to ensure drivers have access to affordable charging, the government can support the sector by equalising VAT on public charging to five per cent and addressing the rise in standing charges.”
Read added that based on the current charging point installation pace, the EV sector remains on track to meet the government’s ambition of 300,000 chargers by 2030.
