L'Oréal and Cambridge Launch €100 Million Sustainable Innovation Accelerator

L'Oréal, the world’s largest beauty brand, has joined forces with the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership to launch a new initiative that could reshape the future of sustainable beauty. Backed by a €100 million commitment over five years, the Sustainable Innovation Accelerator aims to close key solution gaps in the industry and fast-track L'Oréal’s ambitious 2030 sustainability goals.

In partnership with CISL’s Canopy innovation team, the accelerator will scout, support, and scale game-changing ideas from across the innovation ecosystem. This includes startups, small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as mature companies with pilot-ready solutions.

The programme is laser-focused on seven critical challenge areas that will define the next chapter of sustainable beauty:

• Climate-smart innovations that cut carbon and reduce environmental impact

• Solutions that protect and manage water resources more wisely

• Nature-positive innovations that restore ecosystems rather than deplete them

• New alternatives to traditional ingredients and materials, designed with sustainability in mind

• Ways to eliminate fossil-based plastics and reduce plastic waste in packaging

• Circular systems that rethink how resources are used, reused, and recycled

• Business models that are not only sustainable but also inclusive and equitable, too

This collaboration is more than just a research grant. It’s about bringing genuine, scalable innovations into the hands of one of the most prominent players in global beauty. The stakes are high, but so is the potential impact.
