Iceland Foods is making headlines as the first retailer in the world to launch a nationwide food waste reduction programme in collaboration with both Olio and Gander. Starting from 4 August, shoppers across the United Kingdom will have access to real-time discounts on surplus food in more than 900 Iceland stores.
This comes thanks to new integrations with the Olio and Gander apps, which are designed to help reduce food waste while offering customers a chance to save money. Through the Olio platform, users will now receive notifications when discounted surplus items become available in their vicinity. Gander’s technology adds another layer by displaying live updates of reduced-price products on store shelves in real-time.
The decision to roll out this initiative nationwide follows a successful pilot in Bristol and London. Early results from that trial demonstrated strong interest and positive outcomes for both consumers and store operations.
For Iceland, this is more than a tech partnership. It represents a significant step forward in the brand’s broader commitment to reducing food waste and promoting sustainable retail practices. By making these discounts more visible and accessible, the company aims to make a tangible difference at both the household and national levels.
“Iceland has always been dedicated to tackling food waste head-on, and extending this partnership with Olio and Gander is another step towards making a real difference,” said Iceland director of prouct, process and sustainability.
“Not only does this help our customers make their money go further, but it makes a positive change for the planet too.”
Earlier this summer, Iceland announced that it was expanding its partnership with Olio by scaling up its ‘Lucky Dip’ food sharing scheme. That initiative, which involves offering surprise bags of surplus products at a discount, will now be extended to even more locations across the country.
As the cost of living continues to challenge families and food waste remains a pressing environmental issue, Iceland’s approach demonstrates how tech-enabled solutions can create a real-world impact, not just for shoppers, but for the planet as well.
