Iceland Foods has hit a significant milestone on its path to net zero, with its Swindon and Deeside Distribution Centres now producing over 3 megawatts of clean energy. This achievement marks the completion of the first phase of the company’s rooftop solar power purchase agreements.
In collaboration with Ortus Energy and SSE Energy Solutions, the agreement spans six of Iceland's distribution centres: Livingstone, Enfield, Swindon 1, Swindon 2, Warrington, and Deeside. Altogether, the solar installations will cover 9,856 square feet and are expected to generate a total capacity of 8.06 megawatts in the first year.
The systems installed at Deeside and Swindon alone will generate 2.7 million kilowatt-hours annually. That’s enough energy to power an average Iceland store for approximately five and a half years.
Alistair Booth, chief executive of Ortus Energy, said: "The UK warehousing sector offers a clear pathway to accelerate decarbonisation through rooftop solar. This project with Iceland shows how major energy users can capture long-term value from their real estate by generating clean electricity on-site.
"Through our PPA model and collaboration with SSE Energy Solutions, we're proud to be delivering some of the largest rooftop solar projects in the UK and offering a bespoke solution that balances sustainability, cost-efficiency, and energy security for British industry."
Jon Kirby, head of development, SSE Energy Solutions, added: "We want to be a strategic energy partner for businesses by helping them achieve their decarbonisation aims and delivering the benefits of low-carbon electricity at a stable cost directly to their doors and roofs. Rooftop space across the industrial and commercial sector offers a viable path to help the government meet its target of 45-47GW of installed solar capacity by 2030."
